Need help doing your tax return? Our trained and accredited ATO volunteers can help. They provide free and confidential advice to all Monash Caulfield students and will make completing your tax return a piece of cake!

Who can we help?

We can help students with an income of around $60,000 or less, who have simple tax returns and claims.

Examples of students we can help include, but are not limited to...

  • A student with casual employment
  • A student who has just started their first full time job
  • A student who speaks basic English
  • An international student
  • A salary or wage earner
  • A student earning superannuation or dividend income
  • A student receiving income from Centrelink
  • A student with a disability

what is beyond our tax help scope?

Some areas of tax returns can be quite complex and beyond the scope of our work. You will need to see a professional tax agent if you:

  • Ran your own business or use an Australian business number (ABN)

  • Operate under a labour hire agreement quoting an ABN

  • Receive any royalties

  • Receive income from either a public unit trust or a public trading trust

  • Owned or shared ownership in a rental property

  • Made a capital gain or capital loss by selling shares or other capital assets

  • Receive any foreign income, other than a foreign pension or annuity

  • Have income from an employee share scheme

If you can not afford a professional tax agent and your tax is complex, please visit the National Tax Clinic program.

If you are eligible, book an appointment with our ATO volunteers below.

before your appointment

MONSU Tax Help will send you an appointment reminder both via email and text. If you can no longer attend your booked appointment, please ensure to follow the prompt to either reschedule or cancel the appointment. Our ATO trained helpers are volunteers and we appreciate their time, please do not leave them hanging.

Face-to-face appointments

  • Make sure you get there at least 10 minutes early. You won’t be able to show up late as this will not allow enough time to help complete your lodgement. Please reschedule your appointment if you know you’ll be more than a few minutes late.

  • These appointments will take place in our Tax Help Hub, located in Building S, Level 2 at Monash University Caulfield.

Online appointments

  • You will receive a link in your email once you have booked an appointment.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING TO AN APPOINTMENT

  • Your myGov user ID and password (this is a must for us to be able to assist you. If you do not have a myGov account, refer to the video below to create an account before your appointment)
